There are two things to aim at in life; first to get what you want, and after that to enjoy it. Only the wisest of humankind has achieved the second.

Genuine and well sourced. From Smith's aphorism collection 'Afterthoughts' (1931), in the 'Life and Human Nature' section. The original reads 'There are two things to aim at in life: first, to get what you want; and, after that, to enjoy it. Only the wisest of mankind achieve the second.' Two alterations in the corpus text: 'mankind' has been changed to 'humankind', and 'achieve' to 'has achieved'. Recommend restoring the original wording, since a modernized quotation that is still presented as a quotation is a small falsification.
